Loneliness in jail: coping strategies
Article Abstract:
Prisoners cope differently with loneliness than members of the general population. They are more likely to seek relief by participating in programs dedicated to self-development, utilizing social support networks, increasing their daily activities or distancing themselves from the problem through drug abuse and other aberrant behaviors. They also engage in self-reflection and religious activity to escape loneliness, but no more frequently than the general population. These results were garnered by a study of 257 subjects, consisting of 145 male prisoners and 112 males in the general population.

Loneliness in jail: a study of the loneliness of incarcerated men
Article Abstract:
Loneliness is a pervasive social problem which also contributes to criminal behavior and recidivism. Research into the nature of loneliness during incarceration compared chronic and situational with event-related loneliness. How marital status affected this emotion was also evaluated. The study also investigated the social stigma of loneliness, which resulted in peoples' unwillingness to admit to this problem. Offenders' loneliness due to interpersonal isolation was significantly greater than that experienced by the general population. Most other indicia were similar.
