Love and confidence in protection as two independent systems underlying intimate relationships
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that recent developments in the adult attachment literature give an insight into various systems that are also present in childhood. This applies particularly to the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (ECR), a measure of adult attachment. New findings strengthen the connections between ECR Avoidance and personality measures of individual differences in tendencies for nurturance and affection. It is suggested that individual differences in the protection system are influenced by individual differences in the temperament system of emotionality and vulnerability to fear.

The relationship imperative: arguments for a broad definition of attachment
Article Abstract:
The breadth of research on attachment has widened considerably since the initial delineation of the attachment system in 1969. New work has established that a heuristic that emphasizes the need for an infant to form and sustain a relationship is a valuable guide in research on attachment in naturalistic structures. It has been found that sensitivity is a complicated mixture of the mother's perception of and responses to her child's signals. A relationship perspective is beneficial because it encourages extensions of attachment research into family and couple processes.

Confidence in protection: comment on Goldberg et al. (1999)
Article Abstract:
It is important to try to refocus attention on the theoretical basis of attachment. However, it can be argued that it is extremely difficult for researchers to be narrow in concentration their observations on mother-child interactions. Researchers gain only a very limited insight into the origins of attachment when they use only brief observations of interactions in artificial environments unlikely to spark off a child's attachment behavioural system. Careful consideration must be given to attachment theory when drawing up and implementing research strategies.
