Mother-child interaction and the cognitive and behavioural development of four-year-old children with poor growth
Article Abstract:
A study of 23 children with poor growth up to four years of age found some correlations with parenting practices, but a previous biological insult seemed more likely to be the source of the problem. The differences between mother-child interactions of the failure to thrive group and the matched control group were significantly reduced when contingent factors relating to the child's contribution to the interaction were taken into account. For both groups, relationships were found between maternal negativity and child behavioral adjustment as well as between quality of stimulation and cognitive performance.

A family study of autism: cognitive patterns and levels in parents and siblings
Article Abstract:
Researchers used standardized tests to examine the cognitive abilities of the parents and siblings of autistic children. They found that the first-degree relatives who were not affected by autism had abilities consistent with population norms for performance, spelling and reading. They also had slightly superior verbal skills. This verbal skill finding may indicate some type of heterozygote advantage, but it should be treated with caution until further research is conducted.
