Organization structure and productivity: effects of subunit size, vertical complexity, and administrative intensity on operating efficiency
Article Abstract:
The relationship between organizational structure and organizational productivity was examined by studying the operations of a financial services company with 234 branches. The structural variables included size, the number of hierarchical levels in the organization, and administrative intensity. The results indicated that there was a negative relationship between size and productivity, and between the number of hierarchical levels and productivity. The smaller branches had approximately 31% greater efficiency than the larger ones, and the branches with one hierarchical level were approximately 44% more productive than branches with five levels.

The evolution of an employee-training program: a three-year organization development effort
Article Abstract:
An approach to organizational development (OD) that focuses on long-term involvement, the sensing of system dynamics, and contextual variables is presented as an alternative to existing traditional scientific techniques of employee training. The methodology illustrates the evolution of this flexible training program from a consultant-client relationship. Power struggles provided the means for the implementation of the training programs with the consultant's functions evolving from that of training administrator to resource person. Intuitive skills should be utilized to detect ongoing changes that may affect OD efforts.
