Role of family and peers in the development of prototypes associated with substance use
Article Abstract:
Research shows that peer affiliations are the most accurate predictors of substance users' positive prototypes for smoking and alcohol, while prototypes are not greatly influenced directly by parents. However, negative prototypes were predicted by parental smoking. Positive prototypes of smokers and drinkers were developed by adolescents who associated with peers who used substances, and subsequent cigarette and alcohol use were predicted by such social images.
