Sexual orientation and prevalence of body dissatisfaction and eating disordered behaviors: a population-based study of adolescents
Article Abstract:
Homosexual males are more likely than heterosexual males to exhibit body dissatisfaction behavior and eating disorders. Homosexual males more often have a negative body image and consider their body weight to be suboptimal. They indulge in binge eating, fear uncontrolled eating, and frequently engage in purging behavior as compared with heterosexual males. Homosexual females more often consider themselves to be of right weight and have a positive body image in comparison to heterosexual females. Binge eating, eating control perceptions, and dieting are unrelated to sexual orientation in females.
