Simple mental addition in children with and without mild mental retardation
Article Abstract:
Previous research on modeling simple mental addition from the person perspective and item perspective is summarized, following a presentation of Siegler's developmental account of the automatization of addition facts. A study then modeled the speeded performance on simple mental addition problems of six and seven year old children with and without mild mental retardation. A single cognitive dimension was found to span the performance differences on the person side, although a jump was seen in the performance of the normal ability group on the easier items.

Extracting parity and magnitude from Arabic numerals: Developmental change sin number processing and mental representation
Article Abstract:
The ways in which understanding of mental representations of numbers change with age or how children vary the way they extract various features of numbers, are not well understood. A study aimed to provider further knowledge on developmental changes in the parity or odd/even status of numbers. Children were asked to make speeded, bimanual odd/even judgements of the Arabic numerals 0-9. Children showed the Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes effects were small numbers were responded to faster with the left hand than with the right hand.

The role of gesture in children's learning to count
Article Abstract:
Spontaneous gesture in children's counting and their assessment of counting accuracy was examined in two, three and four year olds. Results showed variations in the correspondence of children's speech and gestures over the age groups, and that they adhered to the one-to-one correspondence principle in gesture before speech.
