Success and failure in the measurement of restraint: notes and data
Article Abstract:
There is continued confusion, both conceptually and psychometrically, of two different forms of confounding of success and failure in the measurement of restrained dieting. New research in this area has sought to distinguish two different types of confounding of success and failure in restraint scores. The Restraint Scale has been found to have good validity for the selection of dieters with a high tendency toward disinhibition of restraint. The restraint scales of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire have been shown to give good validity in relation to various measures of intake of food.

Validation of the Flexible and Rigid Control dimensions of dietary restraint
Article Abstract:
The Flexible and Rigid Control scales could assist in understanding the connection between restraint and disinhibited or disordered eating. Disinhibited or disordered eating is clearly linked with high scores on the Disinhibition scale of the Eating Inventory. Despite this, there is no link between dietary restraint in itself and disinhibited or disordered eating behaviours. People scoring high on Rigid and low on Flexible Control could be poor candidates for weight reduction programmes.
