Temperament in late talkers
Article Abstract:
An assessment of the temperaments of first grade children revealed that those who had been slow to develop expressive language tended to be shy or aloof according to ratings on the approach/withdrawal scale. The children with lower ratings on this scale also had shorter sentence lengths in their spontaneous speech. However, they had similar ratings to their peers on other assessment scales, including distractibility and activity levels. These results indicate that communication problems may generate early behavioural problems, but that shyness is a temperamental trait which may contribute to language delays.

Schizoid personality in girls: a follow-up study - what are the links with Asperger's syndrome?
Article Abstract:
A study of 33 girls classified as'schizoid' and 32 'schizoid' boys indicates that the girls and boys are similar in their distinguishing features, but the girls do not have an excess of special interest patterns. Schizoid girls and boys commonly have specific development disorders and occurrence of elective mutism. There are interesting similarities between children diagnosed as having 'schizoid' personalities and children classified as having Asperger's Syndrome and this is worth further analysis. Many of the children described as 'schizoid' in childhood followed those patterns in their adult life also.
