The genetic and environmental relationship between general and specific cognitive abilities in twins age 80 and older
Article Abstract:
The OctoTwin project was undertaken to investigate the correlation between general and specific cognitive abilities from a genetic perspective among Swedish twins age 80 and older. The statistical procedures used in the study were phenotypic analyses, behavioral genetic analyses, power analyses and comparison with younger samples. Results indicated that verbal, spatial and speed factors were interrelated in terms of genetic influences. Also, cognitive processing in the old population was similar to the pattern of younger populations except for the factor of speed.

Importance of shared genes and shared environments for symptoms of depression in older adults
Article Abstract:
A study to examine the genetic and environmental influences that affect individual differences in self-reported depressive symptoms was conducted. The subjects of the study were 114 identical and 138 fraternal twins reared together as well as 68 identical and 161 fraternal twins reared apart. Results indicate that there are small genetic influences in the sample above the age of 60, sharing the same environment was a substantial influence and a majority of the variance in those reared apart was due to environmental influences.
