The neglected sense-olfaction in primate behavior, ecology, and evolution
Article Abstract:
A symposium was held during the 20th Congress of the International Primatological Society in Torino, Italy, in August 2004, bringing together scientists studying several different aspects of olfaction in primates. The topics addressed ranged from the morphology and physiology of the sensory apparatus, the genetics and chemistry of olfactory signals and its use in primate communication, to a comparative analysis of the role of olfaction in neural evolution. This introduction briefly reviews past research on primate olfaction, summary of the scope of this special issue, along with a glimpse of the future.

Scent marking in two Western Amazonian populations on woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha)
Article Abstract:
Patterns of scent marking observed in two wild populations of lowland woolly monkeys in the westernmost portion of the Amazon basin are described, and it was observed that this species engaged in two types of scent markings, that is, chest rubbing, and anogenital rubbing. The results of the study were most consistent with the idea that scent marking plays a role in advertising male quality of competitive ability, and perhaps in coordinating mating activity.
