The qualities of the analyst
Article Abstract:
A psychoanalyst should have certain traits to be effective, including the ability to listen closely and participate. Karen Horney stressed the importance of the wholehearted participation of the analyst to use perception, feelings, intuition, sympathy, and reasoning in helping patients. She also emphasized comprehensiveness of observation and productiveness. Analysts should remain open, although guided by theory, in formulating their own personal style of treating patients.

Epistemological contribution of the Horney theory to group psychoanalysis
Article Abstract:
Karen Horney's theories can be adapted well to group therapy because she believes human development involves a process shaped by how the individual relates to other people and to his environment. The use of Horneyan theories in a group setting involves the exploration of two levels: the interpersonal level which is the social microcosm, and intrapersonal level, which focuses on the unconscious, inner processes of the individual.

The clinical application of Karen Horney's theory to group psychoanalysis
Article Abstract:
Karen Horney's clinical theories can be applied to group psychoanalysis. Horney used a holistic approach to neurosis that involves a systemic and structural manner of viewing the disorder, then uses change as a process of psychic reconstruction, which is different than the Freudian approach. Horney felt that the mirroring and confrontation provided by the group can assist the individual in his quest for self-realization.
