Visions of the self: Lacan's theory of self and the story of the last cookie
Article Abstract:
The schism between self and other as posited by author Jacques Lacan is illustrated by the desire or rejection of a cookie. As a child, one is taught not to take the last cookie because it is selfish. However, if one is asked to take the last cookie, one is afraid of appearing selfish. To cope with this schism and the conflict it presents, a child will invent a false reality that will accommodate hidden desire.
