Disaster related stresses, depressive signs and symptoms, and suicidal ideation among a multi-racial/ethnic sample of adolescents: a longitudinal analysis
Article Abstract:
The post-hurricane depression scores of middle school students are the best predictors of post-hurricane suicidal ideation. The 4,978 adolescents who participated in the study were all exposed to Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Significant predictors of post-hurricane suicidal ideation according to regression analysis included being female, hurricane generated stresses, lack of family support, pre-hurricane suicidal thoughts, and post-hurricane depression. Path analysis found significant effects for being female, low socioeconomic status, both pre- and post-hurricane depression, high stress, low family support, and pre-hurricane suicidal ideation.

The association among negative life events, perceived problem solving alternatives, depression, and suicidal ideation in adolescent psychiatric patients
Article Abstract:
Negative life events (NLE) and negative perceived problem solving alternatives have significant and independent impacts on the development of depression and suicidal ideation in adolescent psychiatric patients. A study with 80 adolescent psychiatric patients reveals that the depressed patients feel more negative effects of NLE than the nondepressives. Major NLE constitute family conflict and academic failure. Depressives are also more likely to consider self-destructive problem solving alternatives.

An investigation of adolescents' substance use behaviors, depressed affect, and suicidal behaviors
Article Abstract:
The inter-relationships among depressive symptoms, substance use behaviors and suicidal behaviors were examined in a sample of 975 adolescents. An association was found between high levels of alcohol abuse and depressive symptoms with higher levels of suicidal behavior. Adolescents who attempted suicide expressed lower levels of family social support, higher density of substance-using peers and greater use of illegal substances.
