A dazzling duo: come out of the darkroom and cut your layout time with ColorStudio and DesignStudio
Article Abstract:
Letraset's ColorStudio image editing program and DesignStudio page layout program bring color publishing to the Macintosh: ColorStudio fills a niche between low-cost programs such as PhotoMac and high-end electronic prepress equipment, while DesignStudio will challenge PageMaker and QuarkXPress as the Macintosh layout program of choice. ColorStudio ($1,995) has considerable hardware requirements, which make it practical for mass production of catalogs and brochures using four-color photographs, professional illustrators working with electronic photographs and graphic design firms. DesignStudio ($795) is not particularly noteworthy for its new features but rather for its sensible, smooth and complete design, although the documentation needs improvement. The package is more like PageMaker than XPress, but it is more powerful; DesignStudio's primary advantage over the competition is its document management.

PC: Archetype Designer
Article Abstract:
Archetype Inc's $3,500 advertisement makeup program for the IBM PC, Archetype Designer 2.1, is an expensive and powerful program that requires an 80386 to run well and takes several months to learn. However, it is recommended as a bargain for professional typesetters and advertisers. The program offers accurate screen display and comes with 120 built-in Compugraphic screen fonts, but the complete Compugraphic library is accessible. A system of models, tags and modes helps automate ad creation. Drawing tools are substituted for clip art, but common ready-made symbols are missing, a curved line can not be drawn and text can not be rotated. Archetype does provide algorithmic hyphenation, allows for the adjusting of point size, kerning and leading and works with color. Snaking columns and text-wrapping are also provided for page layout.

The Cinderella treatment: how to make the most of Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel charts
Article Abstract:
For presentation purposes, spreadsheet graphs are cheap and easy. Graphics created on an IBM PC with Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 are fine for in-house or casual presentations. Creating handsome information graphics on a computer requires a sturdy drawing tool and patience. Designing good spreadsheet graphics calls for three general principles: simplification, making sure the graphic treatment matches the subject, and telling a story. Step-by-step directions are given on how to turn a simple spreadsheet graph into an information graphic that grabs readers.
