A thousand words about pictures
Article Abstract:
Digital photography is far more expensive and consumes more resources than simple word processing, with a complete professional-quality setup costing as much as $20,000. The digital-camera market has not yet expanded beyond the very high and very low ends, but technological improvements should make better-performing digital cameras available at lower prices in the near future. Today's digital cameras are based on charge coupled device (CCD) chips, which are costly because they are difficult to fabricate; next-generation camera chips will use new CMOS technology and embed camrea functions directly while providing resolutions of one million pixels per image. Printer technology is also improving, with a variety of desktop devices generating low-cost, photo-quality prints.

Nikon Coolpix 950, Olympus C2000 Zoom
Article Abstract:
The Olympus C2000 Zoom and Nikon CoolPix 950 offer the highest resolution in a digital camera priced under $1,000. The CoolPix 950 features a lens housing that swivels 180 degrees and the ability to fold the camera and carry it in a large coat pocket. The Nikkor 3X zoom lens is the equivalent of a 38-to-115mm zoom on a 35mm camera. The camera offers three resolutions, each with three choices of JPEG compression. The C2000 Zoom has simple controls, a choice of three ISO ratings, three modes and an excellent 35-to-105mm lens.

Nikon D1
Article Abstract:
Nikon's $5,580 D1 digital SLR is a good, easy-to-use full-featured camera with professional-level capabilities, but it could be better. In tests, the product performed best using the 'raw' file format with Nikon's proprietary Capture software, which adds approximately $500 to the D1's price. Even the best results, however, were not outstanding. Purchasers are cautioned to get Version 1.1 of the software. Version 1.0 has bugs and lacks enhancements.
