Aldus Personal Press 2.0
Article Abstract:
Aldus Corp's $199 Aldus Personal Press 2.0 page-assembly program is a great idea that falls flat on its face. Personal Press employs an automated page-assembly system that uses point-and-click templates. It is well-suited for beginning desktop users, novice designers and users needing to produce standardized layouts in a hurry. The program's results do not live up to its promises, however. It is at once too simplistic and too complicated, and the manual is sketchy. Furthermore, the automated page makeup feature cannot indicate how well the copy fits a given space; headlines are often too small or body text too large; and users do not know what a page looks like until the entire document has been assembled. In addition, although users can build their own templates, they cannot add the automatic cues. Personal Press 2.0 should only be used to create illustrated boilerplate documents.

Font Gander 2.0
Article Abstract:
Rascal Software's $39.95 Font Gander 2.0 finds and displays all fonts stored on a Macintosh or a network in PostScript or TrueType format, whether installed or not. The complete character set is shown in a range of sizes, and type specimens can be printed in various page layouts. Font Gander's zoom tool shows the fonts to 255 points, the grid view shows one character at a time, and the line-by-line view makes a complete line bigger. The program features a clear and easy-to-use onscreen display, but it would be nice if several typefaces could be shown at the same time, and if the program could use Adobe Type Manager Deluxe's antialiasing for a more printlike preview. With the addition of cataloging and comparison tools, Font Gander would be an even better program, but even without these tools the program is useful font manager.

ScreenReady 1.0
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' $199 ScreenReady 1.0 is a highly recommended graphics utility for Macintosh. The product transforms images from Macintosh programs into antialiased PICT images for screen display. This process eliminates unnecessary data required for printing. The package does this extremely well and is recommended for users creating multimedia presentations, videos, slide shows and portable documents. ScreenReady allows the creation of PICT files with bit depths that differ from those on monitors. Overall, this product is one that allows users to work more efficiently without costing too much.
