Personal Press
Article Abstract:
Aldus Corp's $299 Personal Press page layout program can be effectively used to create a relatively simple document, preferably with no typographic variation or art. Unfortunately, lack of typographic control, long wait times for various operations and inaccurate alignment and guide facilities make the program less than optimal for more complex documents. Processes, effectiveness and problems involved in using Personal Press to design a sample newsletter are extensively described. Setting up the page format and placing the text is relatively simple, but a lack of underlying guides, no way to know what original leading may be, failure of reverse type to work, hard-to-read pica rulers, inconsistent text-wrapping, slow speed and excess screen refreshes are among the problems that make Personal Press of limited use.

Legacy
Article Abstract:
NBI Inc's $495 Legacy 1.1 for Windows word processing software can be successfully used to produce relatively simple documents but is unsuitable for high-end graphic design work. The software features extensive word-processing functions, draft views, tools to create tables in columns, flowing of text into linked frames and movable rulers. Major drawbacks include the lacks of master pages for repetitive frames, on-screen display, of TIFF-format or PostScript images, automatic text wrapping around images, vertical alignment of text within a frame, Pantone colors, crop and registration marks and true open/close quotes and apostrophes. The software is used to produce a sample document but was unable to print it on a Linotronic imagesetter.
