At you service: does your service bureau have the right imagesetter for you needs?
Article Abstract:
An understanding of color imagesetters is important because the type and capabilities can have a major impact on the appearance of the printed output. Such an understanding will enable graphics designers and desktop publishers to determine if their printing service has imagesetters compatible with the printing needs. There are two major types of imagesetters: capstan, which have a typical maximum resolution of 2,000 dots per inch (dpi), and drum units with a typical maximum of 3,000 dpi. Features to be considered in selecting an imagesetter include the resolution as a factor of the fineness of the halftone line screen required, the halftone screening capabilities of the raster image processor and repeatability or preciseness of registration. Designers and desktop publishers should also evaluate how well the printing service calibrates and maintains their imagesetters.

Draw, pardner
Article Abstract:
Graphics tablets are becoming an essential tool for multimedia designers, fine and commercial artists, and graphics professionals. Among the reasons for using them are the greater sensitivity that comes with drawing with a stylus, the enhanced features of many drawing programs, and the relatively low cost of many models. Key considerations when selecting a graphics tablet include the size of the drawing area, the need for serial or ADB ports, the ease with which the macro buttons can be customized, and the weight and overall feel of the product. Among the outstanding models currently available are the $199 to $999 Wacom Technology ArtPad, the $395 to $795 CalComp DrawingSlate, Hitachi Digital Graphics Inc's $249 MultiPad, the $395 to $915 Kurta XGT, and the $649 SummaGraphics SummaSketch FX.
