The dialogues of plateau
Article Abstract:
Designers need to have a vision of the future to avoid becoming discouraged by the every day minutiae of their jobs. Such a vision can energize them and keep their work intuitive and fresh. There are a number ways to accomplish this. Some designers begin to work in a different medium than their usual practice. For example, Ken Cato began doing three-dimensional work which, in turn, enhanced his graphic design work. Others seek out a wider client base and do not limit themselves to a particular area. A designer with a good idea can do more to revitalize his firm than any addition of technology or manpower.

Cover guy: Mick Haggerty
Article Abstract:
Mick Haggerty grew up in England where he studied graphic art design and began work as a designer of record album covers. He moved to Los Angeles in 1973 at age 24 and got his US start by doing album covers for designer Rod Dyer. Eventually, Haggerty began planning record marketing campaigns and directed his first music video in 1980. His album covers frequently combined references to American culture with a mixture of design and art, while his videos often use montage. Examples of Haggerty's work are shown.

Matthew Rolston
Article Abstract:
Photographer Matthew Rolston's Los Angeles studio has bare walls, a concrete floor and high ceilings. It is immaculately clean and sparsely furnished in white and black, providing a neutral environment that puts little focus on the photographer. Rolston says that he prefers to remain anonymous and that, in his work, he tries to capture other people's myths, not his own. A portfolio of his photographs is included.
