CD audio dynamite
Article Abstract:
MacroMind Director, a multimedia software for the Apple Macintosh computer, offers an easy-to-use and easy-to-learn set of tools for creating animated musical presentations with CD audio tracks. CD audio tracks provide a richer format and take up less storage space than sound files. About 70 minutes of music can be stored on a single disk. It features a scripting language called Lingo which controls devices such as CD-ROM drives. Director comes with the AppleCD XObject for controlling any AppleCD SC or compatible CD-ROM drive. It also provides a CD Sound Panels folder containing sample color and black and white movies. Any one of these sample movies, which contain the scripts, can be copied to the user's own movie or saved as a new movie to create one that is capable of playing CD audio discs. The scripting language, which is very similar to HyperCard, is easy to learn. The software comes with a Director's Interactivity Manual.

The case of the portly file
Article Abstract:
Graphic files containing gray scale or color images take up a lot of space, but portable storage options are limited. Compact disks (CDs) are one option: they are portable, inexpensive, and easily stored, but drives that record data onto CDs will not be available until mid-1989 at the earliest. CD-ROMs and WORM disks are currently expensive and slow compared to magnetic alternatives. Bernoulli disks are a possible solution, but they are also slower and more expensive than hard disks, their capacities are limited, and there is no common format for PCs and Macintoshes. Macintosh owners should consider portable hard disks for editing and tape backup cartridges or hard disks for image storage; PC users are largely limited to tape backup cartridges. Both groups should use 35mm film to store color images and scan the images when digital versions are needed for production work.

New thrills from old skills
Article Abstract:
Skills used by those using desktop publishing software can be easily transferred to multimedia design projects. For instance, image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Aldus PhotoStyler and Fractal Design ColorStudio are valuable tools for preparing images for print and for making animated sequences. Multimedia requires more data storage capacity than even desktop publishing because many more images are needed to produce smooth animation. Data compression technology is used by many multimedia users to gain the storage space necessary. Multimedia designers must also be skilled in color depth and resolution. Typically color projects work best with 24-bit color, stored on a 24-bit graphics card.
