No ordinary upgrade: Macwrite II
Article Abstract:
Claris Corp has completely rewritten Macwrite and added 50 new features to it, including an excellent spell checker as well as a thesaurus desk accessory - Microlytic's Word Finder. Macwrite II can create multiple columns and display them on screen, though it does not allow the varying of column width or number within a document. Both writing and editing are possible in the formatting view. Defaults for type specifications and paragraph formatting are customized with the Automatic Stationery feature. Four templates - business letter, newsletter, resume and memo - are included in the program. Macwrite II has a new mail merge feature which allows you to create a new data base or use an existing one. Seven documents can be open simultaneously and there are eight formats for saving documents. Macwrite II is a good choice for anyone looking for a good word processing program with extras.

Quick and competent: Write Now 2.0
Article Abstract:
T-Maker Co's $195 entry-level word processing software for the Macintosh, Write Now 2.0, is a quick and competent program that compares well with Microsoft Write and beats Macwrite 5.0. The new version provides keyboard control of the cursor and allows the user to type, scroll or go from page to page without lag. Leading can be set in one-point increments and type comes in sizes of four to 127 points, but automatic hyphenation is missing. The spelling checker contains 100,000 words, but it is not always effective. A character and word count of an entire document or selected section of text is provided, and a Smart Quotes feature provides typographical symbols for quotation marks, while Case Change automatically switches cases on selected text. The program requires 128K of RAM and one floppy drive.

Nothing to write home about: Macwrite 5.0
Article Abstract:
Claris Corp's Macwrite 5.0 word processing program for Apple's Macintosh is valuable for current Mac users but not very practical for anyone else. The $125 program requires 512Kbytes of memory, System 3.2 or later, and Finder 5.3 or later; upgrades for current Macwrite users are $25. The program is simple to learn and use, primarily because it has only the most basic features. Most people will be better off with another word processing program that offers more sophisticated features.
