Case study: the paper chase
Article Abstract:
Entertainment Weekly's staff uses a temporary file-management system in which a plain manila folder - containing printouts of all editing and layout revisions for a particular article - is the main component. The folder presents a way to create order out of countless revisions and determines who should have access to the electronic version of that article and when. Only the person who has the folder is authorized to make changes to the corresponding electronic file. This system alleviates any confusion over who has which file at any given time, and each person must 'sign-off' the manuscript as an indication that it has been read and approved before it can be sent to the next person. The manila folder system seems to be working smoothly, although it is only an interim solution to the problem of finding quality file management software, the only area in which the Macintosh fails.

Driving force: Macs steer Volkswagen of America's publications
Article Abstract:
The insistence of Marlene Goldsmith, publications editor for the Public Relations (PR) department of Volkswagen of America (VW), on the implementation of Apple Macintoshes for desktop publishing has resulted in significant savings for the firm and in the positioning of the PR department as the firm's in-house publishing division. The Macintoshes were opposed by the Technical Services department on the grounds that they were unable to support systems other than DEC VAXes and IBM PCs. An initial investment of $30,000 saved the firm $22,000 in the first year alone. The Macintosh has now become VW's system of choice for documents containing text and graphics.
