Suitcase 3.0
Article Abstract:
Symantec's $69.95 upgraded font management software, Suitcase 3.0 for the Macintosh, works well, but the program still handles font set-up inefficiently. Old problems remain, no significant major features have been added and the program still remains inferior to the Ares FontMinder for Windows. The new drag-and drop operation for creating font sets requires accessing several folders and manipulating windows, unlike FontMinder. Users may also build a font set by adding one font at a time from a scrolling list. The procedure is cumbersome and seems inconsistent with progress in other areas of Mac interface design. Suitcase requires users to know where the fonts are, since the program does not search for available fonts. New features in Suitcase include Power Mac support, fonts sets that install themselves when an application launches, the ability to script performance using Applescript, and availability through Apple Menu.

Tailoring PostScript
Article Abstract:
New PostScript-based editing tools have been introduced by FirstClass of Belgium and Square One of the Netherlands. FirstClass' $495 Tailor originally ran on the NextStep platform but is making its debut on the Macintosh, The product offers a straightforward interface that allows object by object, curve by curve, and point by point editing; users will find that they do not need Tailor's documentation to be able to use the product. Tailor's ability to integrate into a production setting is not seamless, however. Any device-independent information added to the PostScript or EPS files it created, for example, gets lost and have to be restored. Square One's $495 Graphics Connection takes a different approach to Tailor by converting PostScript files into formats that can be edited with existing programs. Square One also offers a file translation service over the Internet for those who do not have the right hardware.
