Ventura's new suite of publisher's power tools: is it soup yet?
Article Abstract:
Ventura Software Inc's $795 Ventura Publisher 4.1 (VP 4.1) desktop publishing software and $695 AdPro 1.1 advertising page makeup program are both competent programs with significant drawbacks. Faced with formidable competition, Ventura is attempting to retain its customer base and add new customers with the new upgrade and PowerTool extensions such as AdPro. New features of VP 4.1 include the formerly separate Ventura Scan and Ventura Separator modules, extension of the global tagging system to include frames, a new ruler, improved speed, outstanding document viewing functions, common Windows dialog boxes, use of the right mouse button for a hot key and thorough access to paragraph functions while using the Text tool. Unfortunately, VP 4.1 still lacks a long list of common and useful features. AdPro facilitates the production of templates for commonly used display ads and graphics, but the software has an unfriendly interface and is awkward to use.

Windows for Ventura
Article Abstract:
There are many pluses in Ventura Software Inc's Ventura for Windows, priced at $895, but with the newness of both Windows 3.0 and Ventura for Windows, problems and inconsistencies are bound to arise. Although no major bugs have been found in Ventura for Windows, users needing reliable behavior from Ventura Publisher will want to stick with the GEM release. Ventura Publisher for Windows requirements are an IBM PC or compatible with 80286 processor or higher, Windows 3.0, 2Mbytes of memory and a 20Mbyte hard disk. The product boasts compatibility across Windows, OS/2 and GEM environments. Users can use the Windows Clipboard to transfer all files other than bit-mapped images. Importing files from Lotus 1-2-3 and other DOS applications has been improved. Users cannot run two sessions of Ventura simultaneously. The method for copying tags between style sheets is inconvenient.
