Color lasers: the next generation
Article Abstract:
Color laser printers have had difficulty in finding a market. Businesses prefer the cheaper color inkjet printers, while graphics users who demand the highest quality require dye-sublimation printers. Color laser printers are faster and produce more accurate images than inkjet printers. The second generation of color laser printers are also much cheaper. The QMS Magicolor LX is the first to be priced under $5,000, but this is still 10 times more than the price of a typical color inkjet printer, and the costs per page are triple that of the inkjets. Color lasers also require more servicing because of their more complex engines and consumables. Considerations when choosing a color laser printer include RAM, processor speed, the number of built-in fonts, image resolution quality, a monocomponent printer engine, continuous-tone emulation, FM screening and hardware interfaces. A buyers guide compares the products offered by seven color laser printer manufacturers.

Font buyer's guide
Article Abstract:
There are three issues to consider when buying PostScript fonts: compatibility with hardware, software, and other fonts, quality and price. Fonts are either encrypted or non-encrypted; Adobe PostScript printers print both types, but most other printers only recognize non-encrypted fonts. Equally important is whether or not you cam mix fonts from various libraries on one page and if the service bureau you use can print your fonts. A printer unable to recognize a font will default to Courier. Since Adobe PostScript was the original standard, the majority of service bureaus will have their library. Quality is somewhat subject to personal taste, but Adobe's inclusion of a code called hints makes for a better quality character at lower resolutions (300 dpi). Price varies with manufacturer. Font packages are generally the most cost-effective.
