User group clout: pool your talents, energy, and influence. Join a user group - or start your own
Article Abstract:
Computer user groups can be in-person groups devoted to a specific topic such as desktop publishing; job-oriented groups; company user groups; or electronic user groups, called bulletin board systems (BBSs). Group members learn about new products, how to better use existing products, and how to solve problems; and they have an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills. Vendors frequently make presentations to in-person groups and ask them to test new products and provide feedback. BBSs have a significant advantage in reaching larger numbers of people over a wider geographic area than in-person groups do. BBSs are convenient, but do cost money, particularly for telephone charges. Participating in an in-person user group or BBS exchange can benefit anyone involved in desktop publishing. A directory of user groups, BBSs, and vendor help number is included.

What's the news on the Hill
Article Abstract:
Roll Call, a newspaper published in Washington, D.C., reports the news on Capitol Hill. The paper, edited by Sidney Yudain and published by James Glassman, is now published on a desktop system involving ten Macintosh computers, two 20-Mbyte hard disks, and an Apple Laserwriter and an Imagewriter, all linked via Appletalk. Glassman, who wanted to modernize the paper's production procedures without changing the established look of the product, was advised by Thomas J. Piwowar, a desktop publishing consultant.
