Coordinated colors: how to get a reliable color preview of your Illustrator and Freehand pages
Article Abstract:
Variations in monitors, inks, paper and other factors can influence the color results in products created by Adobe's Illustrator 88 and Aldus's Freehand graphics software. The following process will closely match on-screen color to on-paper color. Create a document with nine small squares and color them one each of 100 percent cyan, magenta, yellow, white, and black. Color the remainder 100 percent of each color in the combinations magenta and yellow; cyan and yellow; magenta and cyan; and magenta, cyan and yellow. These are the inks used in color process print shops to create the entire color spectrum. Have the file separated and get a printed or other proof. Compare the proof colors to on-screen progressive color chart and adjust to match using the color picker. Important factors include consistency in machine settings and lighting and letting the monitor warm for 20 minutes before starting. monitor

PC: Dawn Workstation
Article Abstract:
Agfa Compugraphic Division's $15,995 Dawn Workstation 1.3 is a complete advertisement makeup system that includes Dawn ad makeup software and is recommended as a good buy for those whose advertising volume warrants the expense. Dawn provides access to the full Compugraphic library, accurately displays typefaces on-screen and holds up to 100 fonts on-line at once. Superior characters are handled as part of a font package, but fonts must be purchased separately. The program has automatic and manual leading and kerning and allows fractional or decimal units of measurement. Although clip art is not included, there is an ample supply of drawing tools and line art can be scanned with the bundled Zsoft Publisher Paintbrush. Color screens can be created in one percent increments and text can be superimposed over graphics. The workstation is fast and effective, but does suffer frequent breakdowns.
