Epson Stylus Color 3000
Article Abstract:
Epson's $1,999 Stylus Color 3000 is a wide-format color inkjet printer that offers top-notch output for a remarkably low price. It is ideal for presentations and color comparison and comes close to the print quality of digital proofing devices. The Stylus 3000 prints at up to 1,440 by 720 dpi and uses Epson's patented Micro Piezo printhead technology to spray quick-drying inks via electrostatic attraction. Setup and installation are remarkably easy, and there are optional LocalTalk and Ethernet cards for network use. Epson ships the 3000 with a software-based PostScript Level 2 raster image processor (RIP) that allows printing from any machine on a LAN. Images printed at the highest resolution have a near-continuous-tone appearance and vivid colors, although printing a 10MB letter-size image takes three minutes and 41 seconds at 1,440 dpi.

Tricks of the trade
Article Abstract:
Macintosh-based prepress professionals are being forced to expand their traditionally single-platform services to meet the demands of an increasingly multiplatform environment. Ideally, prepress professionals would recognize the vast Windows market by adding a Windows 95 workstation and Windows versions of popular publishing applications or by using a hybrid workstation. However, many continue to rely on their Macs to output PC files, which requires complicated procedures. Others are printing files from the software within which it was created. Adobe Systems' PageMaker, QuarkXPress and Macromedia's FreeHand are cross-platform, but CorelDraw has trouble crossing platforms. Fonts present a unique challenge to cross-platform efforts.

PowerLook 3000
Article Abstract:
The most notable feature of the $7,295 Umax Technologies' PowerLook 3000 flatbed color scanner is its moving scanning bed and fixed optical assembly. This design contributes ot the equipment's high resolution of 1,220x3,048 pixels per inch (ppi). PowerLook 3000 employs two lenses: one allowing the CCD to capture images of up to 8.5"x11.7" and the other allowing capture of smaller art work and transparencies using a high-resolution trilinear CCD array. The high resolution reaches the true optical resolution of 3,048x3,048 ppi and increases to a maximum of 12,192x12,192 ppi with software interpolation. PowerLook comes bundled with Binuscan's excellent color management tool, PhotoPerfect Master.
