ColorMatrix 1.2, Color Compass 1.0
Article Abstract:
Total Integration's $295 ColorMatrix 1.2 and Praxisoft's $129 Color Compass are two useful utilities for color creation, correction and matching but are targeted at different users. ColorMatrix is a utility for any program that accepts Photoshop plug-ins but is aimed at prepress professionals using such systems as Scitex or Linotype-Hell workstations. The software enables users to employ number-based color selection and quickly create a variety of color effects and transformations. Unfortunately, a lack of a preview mode for any of these results in an awkward and slow trial-and-error color selection and limits creativity. Color Compass, though, is a pleasure to use as it enables the easy opening, transfer, and saving of color between most of the popular paint, drawing and DTP programs. The software provides numerous tools for transforming colors into new ones but has a few drawbacks that are to be resolved in incremental upgrades.

Kai's Power Tools 3.0
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of MetaTools' Kai's Power Tools (KPT) 3.0 reveals that the Mac-based special effects application is very useful. It will have particular appeal for Power Mac users who will gain outstanding performance. Users of older models, however, may be disappointed with KPT 3.0 in a variety of areas, mainly speed. The application features a totally revamped Texture Explorer module, which enables users to develop textures with better depth and dimension compared to version 2.1. In addition, the Gradient Designer and Texture Explorer modules now allow users to adjust Saturation, Hue and Contrast before committing to an effect. One of the most innovative modules is Spheroid Designer, which allows users to create transparent, opaque or semi-transparent globes. KPT 3.0 is priced at $199 and requires 12MB of hard disk space.

Ofoto 2.0: powerful automatic scanning software makes getting good color scans a cinch
Article Abstract:
The powerful $395 Ofoto 2.0 color scanning and image processing software package from Light Source is the best available tool for ensuring accurate color between scanner, monitor and printer. The software includes tools for automatically determining the type of original document; a one-button pre-scanning image editing, alignment and enhancement facility; RGB to CMYK color conversion; color matching through use of included ColorSync printer calibrations; and manual color-matching calibration capabilities. Settings for specific image corrections and changes can be saved as a template. One drawback is that the manual calibration process can be very time-consuming. Ofoto 2.0 for the Apple Macintosh is judged an exceptional value.
