Express yourself for less
Article Abstract:
Power Up Software Corp's $149.95 Express Publisher 1.0 is an outstanding value, is easy to learn and works well for designing pamphlets, short newsletters and brochures up to 32 pages in length. The user can link text frames before importing a text file so that text automatically fills all linked frames, allowing for good control over layout. It is possible to wrap text around irregularly-shaped graphics as well. Express Publisher comes with the Intellifont font scaling technology so you can generate fonts as you print, in sizes from six to 144 points, and in italic, bold and bold italic styles. The two fonts available with the program are CG Times and CG Triumvirate; an additional three packages containing two font families can be purchased for about $60 each. Express Publisher requires 640Kbytes of RAM, hard disk and floppy drive, DOS 3.0 or later version, mouse and graphics adapter.

Screens up for grabs: Hotshot Graphics, Hijaak, Snap, Grafplus
Article Abstract:
Hotshot Graphics, Hijaak, Snap, and Grafplus are four programs for printing a captured screen quickly. These memory-resident programs will all print a screen on a PostScript printer in less than two minutes as well as make the printed screens look better on a monitor. Hotshot Graphics provides the sharpest printed image and has the fastest printing speed, but costs $100 more than Hijaak, its closest rival. Hijaak is the best selection for price, print speed, and file-conversion capability. Snap is the only one of the four programs that will capture a Ventura screen while loaded in memory with other utilities. Grafplus is the most basic program and lowest-priced. Grafplus lists for $49.95, Snap costs $89.95, Hijaak has a list price of $99, and Hotshot Graphics sells for $249.

A Bargain Ventura? Publish It
Article Abstract:
Although it does not equal the power or performance, Publish It is very similar to Ventura Publisher. At one-third the price of Ventura Publisher, it performs well for small page layout jobs. Publish It operates in the same GEM operating environment as Ventura Publisher. It has improved some of the weaker graphics tools of the Xerox product. The program does not have automatic page wraps, text and graphics are placed in frames and can then be copied on the pages. Publish it does not generate indexes or table of contents. It is a best in a low-end publishing environment, where documents are short and basic. Publisher runs on a PC XT, AT or compatible with DOS 2.0 and above. The program lists for $199.95.
