Faure Xrex 1.0
Article Abstract:
Fauve Software's $795 Fauve Xres is an easy-to-use and very fast image-processing software package that provides powerful competition to Adobe's more expensive Photoshop. Xres also offers capabilities comparable to HSC Software's $995 Live Picture without the massive (32MB) memory demands. Fauve Xres opens large images very quickly in Xres's native format that all the editing is done in. Application of filters and other effects to an image and the conversion between color modes are also amazingly fast. The only images where Photoshop excels in speed are relatively small ones. Other Xres features include up to 100 undo steps, a good tool and brush collection with several similar to Fractal Design Painter, several paper textures and autonomous floating objects. The major drawbacks are an insufficient manual, no direct print capability and lack of a text tool (due in version 1.1).

Makeup, EZ Effects: creating special effects with type is fast and easy in Makeup but slow and painful in EZ Effects
Article Abstract:
The $149 MakeUp software package from Bitstream is an easy-to-use and fast font manipulation tool, but Filmotype's $129 EZ Effects font-manipulation package is awkward, slow and lacking in some important capabilities. MakeUp features include almost all the capabilities of draw programs, instant 3-D type effects, compatibility with both TrueType and PostScript Type 1 fonts, file import and export functions and a collection of 25 Bitstream font outlines. The only drawback is that text must be entered through a dialog box rather than typed directly on the screen. EZ Effects, by contrast, lacks support for Type 1 fonts, does not export in EPS format, has awkward text and object manipulation, lacks an Undo command, is not recommended for use with PostScript printers and has extremely poor documentation. The only positive attribute is that the software includes 100 TrueType fonts.

Designworks: this modest drawing program offers professional graphics prowess at a budget price
Article Abstract:
The $239 Designworks software package from Computer West is a Windows-based drawing tool with most of the capabilities, precision and power of high-end drawing packages. Features include the usual gradient shading and color fills, spot and process CMYK color separations, font manipulation tools and control of screen angles and lines per inch. Outstanding features include the ability to lock objects, groups of objects and text into place, preventing them from being edited or moved, and the ability to print out image layers separately for proofing. Drawbacks include a lack of extensive prepress controls and PostScript printer enhancements and an occasionally awkward interface. The software received three stars on a scale of five.
