Flightcheck 3.2/Preflight Pro 1.0
Article Abstract:
Markzware's $399 FlightCheck 3.2 DTP extension software, designed to inspect and analyze files, rated at four stars out of five, handles a wide range of file formats, including EPS and raw PostScript; QuarkXPress and QuarkXPress Passport; and Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and PageMaker. In addition, clients' fonts do not need to be installed on the preflighting workstation to be analyzed; FlightCheck can make a DB from the client's fonts and inspect that. In contrast, Extensis' $399.95 Preflight Pro 1.0, rated at three and one-half stars, requires that all fonts be installed on its workstation or be reported missing. However, PreFlight Pro can scan many documents and report all errors at once. Moreover, PreFlight Pro's new Pilot feature guides the user to XPress-file problem areas and suggests solutions.

CSI PhotoLab 1.2, Series 3 Screens 1.3
Article Abstract:
Evaluations of Cytopia Software's $99.95 CSI PhotoLab and Adromeda Software's $159 Series 3 Screens 1.3 reveals that both are useful Mac-based plug-in filters for programs that support Adobe Photoshop depending on the type of work that needs to be accomplished. Series 3 will appeal to users who work in black-and-white images and want the perfect screening pattern for photos and who are serious about digital halftoning. Series 3 has an innovative interface and its tools are very powerful. CSI PhotoLab includes eight filters that are based on traditional photography principals and are targeted at users working in color. Overall, CSI Negative and CSI PhotoFilter are especially useful, but the other six are mostly forgettable. In addition, the application suffers from an unappealing interface.

Intellihance 2.0
Article Abstract:
Extensis Corp's $149 Intellihance 2.0, a Photoshop plug-in, automatically scans and corrects color and grayscale images. Intellihance uses artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze image content, tonal balance, sharpness and background noise. The program then adjusts the image, matching against defaults or customized parameters. For novices, Intellihance handles 95% of image-correction needs. For Photoshop experts, the product is recommended for its batch-processing abilities. It may not correct every image perfectly, but for large batch images, it functions well and saves time. Intellihance 2.0, a Macintosh program, works with Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1 and System 7.1.
