Batch It 1.0
Article Abstract:
Gryphon Software Corp's $199 Batch It 1.0 batch-processing software for graphics applications offers an extremely easy-to-use interface that can efficiently process groups of images, but it does not have the robustness of other batch-processing applications. Batch It's interface is outstanding for this type of software. It includes a list of functions, called titles, on the left side of the desktop, and a work area in the center. Processing functions such as conversion from RGB to CMYK are dragged to the workspace and connected together into a processing network. Networks can be saved for later use with other projects. Graphics files that need processing are then chosen, and put into the network. Batch It processes the files and outputs them in their new forms. The application includes some basic image-editing features, and Photoshop plug-ins can be used as function titles. The application is not able to convert files between Windows and Macintosh formats, which other batch-processing applications offer.

Colorize 2.0
Article Abstract:
DS Design's $495 Colorize 2.0 software is used for adding color to previously drawn or scanned graphics. The single-purpose software is very easy to use. The process starts with a black and white TIFF file of a piece of line art, and works on a single base color to which other colors fill and trap. The tools are similar to those of other image editors such as Photoshop, with a few extras to accommodate the tool's specific purpose. The Paint to Edge program is used to make sure that a color does not fill past a given line. Whenever the tool comes across a source line, it knows to stop. The common mistake of filling in an entire screen with a single color is avoided, since the Paint to Edge tool will not paint past a broken line. The Erase tool also stays within the lines, and affect only the selected color. Blends and airbrush effects can be added, and exporting the illustrations is simple and several levels of compression are provided.

Pixar Typestry StrataType 3d: two new programs make 3-D type easy - maybe too easy
Article Abstract:
The ease of use of Pixar's $299 Pixar Typestry and Strata Inc's $229 Stratatype 3d computer graphics programs can be useful, but they may encourage users to overuse 3D type. Pixar Typestry offers easy kerning and tweaking of layout because users may move letters individually. Users may make diverse images in one file and give them different attributes. But users cannot easily move images in and out of Typestry without the addition of more programs. StrataType 3d, a slightly less powerful program, is easy to use, which makes the program a valuable addition to illustration and page layout programs. However, StrataType lacks kerning controls and global letterspacing is only available within words, which makes it difficult for users to produce a typographically sound 3D headline.
