Take the weight off
Article Abstract:
Linographics' $49.95 TypeIndexer 1.0.2 is one of six font-management packages reviewed and is capable of seeking Type 1 fonts and creating an index of all the fonts on a system. UniQorn 1.0.2
Article Abstract:
SoftPress Systems' $895 UniQorn 1.0.2 page layout application for Macintosh is an admirable program that offers users a strong interface and underlying structure, but it faces stiff competition against Adobe PageMaker and QuarkXpress. In addition, UniQorn is based on QuickDraw GX, a technology that has not caught on with users, although this may change when GX becomes standard with the upcoming System 8 Mac operating system. UniQorn offers users a more advanced approach to document and page structure compared to other competing packages. Experienced users will find that it is faster than other applications, as well. UniQorn's most attractive feature is the hierarchical way it manages pages within a document and elements included in the pages. The application is frame-based, and grid tools are outstanding. However, the program does not allow for keyboard index generation, and color-matching is not extensive.

The high end down under
Article Abstract:
Wright Technologies is planning to bring its Wright Design DTP technology to American PCs. The Australian company has already created a high-end version of its publishing technology, but at $55,000 per system, this is not for the average desktop publisher. Once the PC version comes out, Wright Design will offer artists an extremely speedy package that uses a proprietary internal format, called DCM, to generate rapid handling. All data created in or brought into the program is translated into the DCM format. The DCM information is then converted to PostScript during output. The program offers an impressive demo, but additional features will nevertheless be desirable in the finished product, which is expected to sell for about $800 when it reaches the US.
