Four QuarkXTensions
Article Abstract:
Four QuarkXTension add-ons for QuarkXPress, including two from Lowly Apprentice Production and two from HanMac Software, are reviewed. Lowly Apprentice's $49.99 FingerType is an interactive tool for altering text characteristics such as kerning and point size by sliding and pushing. There are equally interactive tools for adjusting leading, adding rules, inserting drop caps, copying specifications between paragraphs and changing margins. Its only drawback is the fact that users can apply the effects to only one character or letter pair at a time. XPert CharacterStyles, part of the $169.99 XPert Tools bundle, is less cumbersome and more flexible than the built-in character styles in XPress 4.0. Users can choose any character trait and check whether one is part of a style. HanMac's $169 HX PowerSearch can search for nearly any element of a document and replace it with anything else. HX Express Font is a $75 program that organizes font menus, but is awkward to set up.

Signs of the times
Article Abstract:
Illustrator Andy Lackow employs Adobe Illustrator to quickly create designs under a short deadline. Lackow begins by sketching all objects in the illustration in two dimensions, later rendering them into 3D. He also sets the type that will appear in the illustrations during this process. The final illustrations are begun by converting the type to outlines and importing each element into Strata StudioPro, maintaining the established spacing and size relationships. Each object is then extruded in a Shape window, making it three-dimensional. Textures are applied to the objects, some of which are imported from Adobe Photoshop. StudioPro's Insert Shape command enables the artist to place and position representations of the objects as though they were the actual object. All of the illustration's objects are placed into a Modeling window and camera and lighting angles are selected. The illustrations are then rendered.

Article Abstract:
Publish magazine utilized an opportunity to photograph the winners of its 7th Annual Design competition using digital camera technology. Initially, a Leaf Systems Lumina digital camera was employed as a scanning camera. The result was processed by QuarkPress for overall composition and layout work, providing the camera crew with a firm guide for the subsequent shoot. A Leaf Systems Digital Camera Back fitted into a Sinar-Bron Sinar E digital camera was employed, using angles calculated by Sinar software. The final step was the processing of the images, using Leaf Systems ColorShop software running on an Apple Macintosh Quadra. The result, in addition to the outstanding 42-bit color quality, was a savings of $1,400 and a day's time.
