Graphics to go
Article Abstract:
Producers of newspapers and small magazines may access and download the latest international news stories and photos from Knight-Ridder Inc's PressLink on-line service. Updated daily, PressLink also offers archival material at a price small publications can afford. Photo quality falls short of glossy, high-end magazine requirements, but other publishers will appreciate the variety and accessibility of materials that may be sized according to the publisher's needs, thereby eliminating expensive major newswire or clip-art services and time-consuming sorting and scanning operations. Offered through major on-line carriers, PressLink costs $50 for the initial set-up, $13.80 per hour domestic access time plus $.054 per kilocharacter downloaded, royalty fees and a $6 monthly maintenance fee.

The world at your fingertips: Dial M for modem, part 1
Article Abstract:
Computer bulletin boards and commercial information services are loaded with desktop publishing program help, fonts, images, and layout templates, all of which can be downloaded inexpensively, quickly, and conveniently. Data compression programs are needed because to cut communication and access costs down, most downloadable files are compressed in size. But even compression programs can be downloaded. The advantages of commercial services such as CompuServe and GEnie are their reliability. Finding a bulletin board with what the user wants and needs may take some time. Directions for logging on and browsing on-line are provided along with a glossary of telecommunication terms. How to send and receive E-mail is also explained.

Functionalism as an aesthetic in visual information displays
Article Abstract:
Visual information designers seek to attract the attention of readers and then to inform them in a way that can be understood and remembered. Such visual displays can foster group communication and problem solving and may educate and persuade. Text should be clearly written and share the display space equally with images. Such communication displays can appear in many contexts, including education films, informational books and in corporate meeting facilitation. Design schools sometimes focus on other aspects of design and do not emphasize the problem-solving potential of design.
