Grappling with text and graphics: merging words and images on the PC takes commitment
Article Abstract:
Integrating text and graphics is becoming more important in office applications, but it is difficult to achieve integration on IBM PCs and compatibles because of DOS's lack of graphics-handling and windowing capabilities and a lack of standards for graphics and text formats and screen displays. Windowing environments may eventually become a solution, but programs like Indigo Software's Iprint, Graham Software's SC Laserplus, and Polaris's RAM-Resident Printmerge are interim strategies. The $259 Iprint has a Macintosh-like interface but functions best as a form generator because of limits in its handling of text and its graphics flexibility. The $495 SC Laserplus imports graphics and has a text editor, graphics functions, icon generator, and page description language, but word processing and page formatting are arduous and complex with the package. The $149 Printmerge enables users of most popular word processing packages to embed commands to have RAM-resident Printmerge add graphics in the printing process.

Recycled images: PC Image Director Integrated Graphics Package
Article Abstract:
AT & T's Image Director Integrated Graphics Package is a graphics-preparation system that allows easy preparation of fliers and newsletters. The system uses AT & T's sheet-fed image scanner for scanning text and graphics, and scanned images can be cut and pasted together with imported text files. Five components, which can be separately purchased, are needed to run the software. Components include the following: AT & T SI-60 Scanner Interface Board ($150); AT & T 1024HP Graphics Board ($995); AT & T CRT 327 High Resolution Monitor ($395); AT & T SC-60 Scanner ($995); AT & T Mouse 6300 ($150). The software itself costs $350, and an IBM PC XT, AT, or compatible is required. The capabilities and the uses of the system are detailed. For $3,035, the limited features of the system might not justify its cost.
