Imposing order
Article Abstract:
Four software packages that automate the proces of imposition, or arranging the pages in a group assembled on a printing plate in the correct order for the final publication, are reviewed. Pages can be imposed either before or after they are run through a raster image processor (RIP), but doing the imposition first makes sense in today's workflows. Ultimate Technologies' $5,996 Impostrip Second Generation 5.1 is designed to impose before rasterization and is compatible with a variety of DTP, color-separation and trapping programs. DK and A's $2,995 Imposition 2.0 operates as a QuarkXTension plug-in for QuarkXPress and can import and preview native XPress and PageMaker files. It has predefined signature templates and facilitates fluid page editing. ScenicSoft's $2,995 Preps 3.0 can impose pages that are already rasterized and has built-in color separation. Luminous Technology's $3,995 PressWise 3.0 imposes PostScript files on any platform and easily handles multi-page composites.

Extensis QX-Effects 3.0
Article Abstract:
Extensis' $129.95 QX-Effects 3.0 is an XTension plug-in for QuarkXPress that makes it very easy for users to add type effects such as drop shadows, cast shadows, glows, bevels and embosses to photos within the DTP package. Users can interactively create type-on image effects XPress alone does not support. QX-Effects is both simple and flexible, with a wizard-like menu and extensive user control over shadow color, direction, transparency and the direction of the light source. The program creates a new picture box between the text box and the box containing the underlying image, saving the image in the new box as a file linked to the main XPress document. Effects are independent of both the text and image and are easy to edit. QX-Effects has some limitations; it works only with TIFF files and can apply effects only over rectangular picture boxes, although there are work-arounds. It is nevertheless a very useful tool that saves time and frustration.

Long-distance operations
Article Abstract:
New technologies including ISDN, ATM and the Internet, and a variety of software supporting these technologies are available to meet the publishing industry's increasing need to transfer large 20MB to 200MB data files. ISDN provides point-to-point data transfer dial-up service at a rate of 64-Kbps to 2.69-Mbps, at a cost of $25 per month plus per-minute charges, for the lower transmission rate. A network service provider is a viable alternative to expensive private networks for users who frequently transmit large data files between two or more sites. These providers use frame relay or ATM services, and ATM can transit 100MB of data in 8 minutes. Transferring data over the Internet using the TCP/IP protocol is also possible, but it is slow due to the slow speed of modems. Over 20 high-speed transmission software products are available in the market, and they support one or more of the ISDN, ATM and Internet technologies.
