Is newer always better?
Article Abstract:
Many users constantly upgrade software when in fact earlier versions serve them well and newer, feature-bloated packages only drain their productivity. Quark Inc has released its long-awaited QuarkXPress 4.0, the software's first major upgrade in several years, with major psychological effects because the fact users perceive they have been waiting so long leads to a sense of anticipation and a stronger urge to upgrade. XPress 4.0 is less impressive considered in the light of the fact that it is an upgrade than in and of itself; it is an excellent program, but thousands of users have produced acceptable documents with version 3.32. Some upgrades, such as Microsoft Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, actually fail on the marketplace because they are notoriously buggy and suffer from poor performance compared to their predecessors. Microsoft has actually promised that many commands in its Office 98 for the Mac will revert to those Mac users had been more accustomed to.

One-step publication management for the Mac?
Article Abstract:
Page Director, from Managing Editor Software, is a $895 to $1,495 computer graphics package that could be very useful for many publishers. The product is a blend of a document management program and a page layout utility. The most useful Gather command allows the user to retrieve text, graphics and ads for a publication from wherever they reside on the hard disk or network, and make them ready for placement onto the document pages. Time savings are gained from the ability to set up the basic layout and page assignments for an entire newspaper as quickly as the program permits, without having to import every element one by one into Quark. There is no file locking or revision tracking. The software works with Macintosh and Mac compatible files and is not useful for a mixed-platform environment. Page Director is more useful for documents that are worked on as a whole, rather than as groups or chapter segments.

Publisher's Prism with Aldus PageMaker and Ventura Publisher: separation specialist
Article Abstract:
Publisher's Prism 4.0, from InSight Systems Inc, is a $495 program designed strictly for color separation. Other programs are needed to create the page and print to disk. This results in four PostScript files that must be sent to the service bureau. Printing can be speeded by using the Prism Make-All command. Any page layout software package can be used to create the page, as long as it can generate PostScript print-to-disk files. Professional controls and customizable settings are offered; more than any of the other packages evaluated in this section. Controls for enhancing or correcting an image are limited. Flexibility is available for handling screen frequency, screen angles, dot shape, resolution, dot gain and densitometer settings for halftones. This is the package of choice for the serious desktop color separator.
