Pressed for type: CD-ROM technology puts a world of fonts at your fingertips
Article Abstract:
For those users who have a CD-ROM disk drive, CD-ROM data bases or computer fonts provide a wide selection of fonts at low prices. Usually the CD-ROM sells for less than $100 and includes some basic fonts. More specialized fonts are encrypted on the disc until the user pays for them. Users can telephone or send a facsimile to the manufacturer, provide a number that identifies the compact disc and system and a credit card number. Within an hour the manufacturer provides an access code that releases the desired font. This system is much faster than waiting for overnight deliveries or shopping different software stores. CD-ROMS are ideal for font storage as each disc holds 650Mbytes of data. Evaluations of seven products are presented. There is a wider selection of products for the Macintosh than for IBM-compatible microcomputers.

Bitstream Type Treasury 1.0
Article Abstract:
Bitstream Inc's Type Treasury is a basic computer font software package that is priced at $69. Type Treasury's greatest asset is its extensive library, though it can be tricky to use because the fonts are given Bitstream names. Fortunately the company has included a utility that cross-references names to ones that are better known. Until Autologic introduced APS-TypeScriber, Type Treasury was the only compact disc to offer Bitstream's PostScript font library. Type Treasury includes a printed directory with character sets in all fonts, though downloading of bitmat suitcases is required to view the directory. Fonts can be added by calling the company.
