Polaroid Palette Plus
Article Abstract:
Polaroid's $2,999 Palette Plus slide recorder for the IBM PC is an affordable option for users who ordinarily could not justify the time and expense of slide presentations. While it is the lowest in price of the 11 models tested, it also has the lowest resolution and least vivid colors. Its resolution is 640 x 350 pixels with an EGA adapter - suitable only for informal presentations. Type is lumpy and not easy to read when viewed from more than a 10-foot projection distance. The Palette Plus can be installed without a special adapter card in machines with a serial port and either a CGA or EGA graphics board - EGA is definitely recommended. Harvard Graphics has Palette Plus as a choice in its setup menu and was used to produce test slides. Application program fonts are used. IBM PC, XT, AT or compatible with CGA, EGA or compatible graphics board and RS-232 serial port are required. This recorder earns three stars on a five-star rating.

Lasergraphics Rascol II-LFR
Article Abstract:
Lasergraphics' $9,950 RASCOL II-LFR slide recorder for IBM PC is in the same price range as Matrix Technologies' excellent Slidewriter but RASCOL's image clarity is far inferior. Slides are not sharp enough for auditorium presentations. The product earns two stars on a five-star rating system. Its one advantage is speed. The controller processes a slide recorded directly from Harvard Graphics in about one minute. The slide file inserts into the controller for processing and slides are recorded in background. This model is the same as the Macintosh version but the separate controller installs in the microcomputer. A combination version that includes the Mac software and the PC controller is available for $11,595. This model includes nine Bitstream bit-mapped fonts and two Compugraphic Script outline fonts. IBM PC, XT, AT or compatible hardware is required.
