Mortar 2.0
Article Abstract:
Big Picture Multimedia's $399.95 Mortar 2.0 Web authoring software can be used to create, manage and maintain Web sites using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, dynamic HTML (DHTML) and other standards. Mortar tries to combine all the tools required by a Webmaster, but it excels in no single area, and it can be difficult to use. When creating a table, for example, cell contents have to be placed between the correct tags even when the table is generated automatically, whereas other Web design packages present a spreadsheet-like interface for entering table data. The process of creating a numbered list is counterintuitive, and creation of pages with frames is not as fluid as it is in such packages as Brooklyn North's HTML Assistant Pro 97 and Luckman Interactive's WebEdit Pro 3.0. Many other aspects of Mortar's interface are non-standard as well, such as Ctrl-S as the 'find' function rather than the 'save' function.

Microsoft singing in the dead of night
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's new Internet Studio online authoring environment provides an entirely novel way to publish on the Web. Users can view it from any browser on any platform and can also construct links in it to any other Web page and vice versa. However, authoring in Internet Studio requires a PC running Windows 95 and a Windows NT server. Internet Studio will support Sun's programming language, Java, and it relies on C++ and Visual Basic. In addition, it utilizes a new OLE-compliant version of HTML created by Microsoft. Internet Studio has the potential to change Web publishing because it allows users to group Web pages within a site into titles and sections like a paper with sports and news sections. More structure into sites is possible, facilitating updating and site management.
