CorelDraw 8
Article Abstract:
Corel's $695 CorelDraw 8 draw software is the first cross-platform release of the package, although the Macintosh version will follow the Windows version by about six months. The new release adds the Corel Photo-Paint image processing package to the Macintosh version (it has long been part of the Windows version), and it features the 100-page Commercial Printing Guide. Users can choose either the CorelDraw presets or an environment more like FreeHand 8, and the two packages continue to borrow features from each other: CorelDraw now has a Free Transform tool much like the one that has long been part of FreeHand, and FreeHand has added such CorelDraw features as transparency lenses, free rotation and click-and-drag object skewing. The ability to apply effects interactively to onscreen objects in real time makes CorelDraw worth considering for current FreeHand and Adobe Illustrator users.

Tracer 1.0
Article Abstract:
ScanVec's $495 Tracer application changes graphic images into line art. Its vectoring tools are surprisingly accurate but it is missing typical high-end production tool features. It works by scanning a graphical image and tracing it to yield a high-quality object-oriented image that can be edited and used in a page layout program. Tracer is time-saving because it allows the user to scan images directly into the program. The logical step after scanning is minor cleanup with a pencil and eraser tool, which is surprisingly unavailable. The vectoring Outline Enhance Curves function performs best on low-quality images. The Outline Enhance Corners features works best with high-quality images. The program's weak Bitmap Editing mode is compensated for with the excellent Vector Editing mode. Its color palette's colors are obscurely named and difficult to match with colors from other programs.

Extensis Suitcase 8
Article Abstract:
An evaluation is presented of Extensis Suitcase 8.0, a font-management software package priced at $89.95. The software is lacking in features and correspondingly is no longer first choice solution for publishers and designers. Suitcase's biggest drawback is its failure to manage the font library. It does however, manage font activation and deactivation.
