The workstation advantage: when micros don't stack up
Article Abstract:
Desktop publishing situations that require mammoth amounts of memory, multiuser and multitasking environments, and the ability to handle prepress production of hefty documents and graphics may require networked workstations rather than microcomputers. The difference is in the software. Workstations run on Unix, a multitasking and multiuser operating system that is the preferred environment of engineers and CAD-CAM designers. Unix systems are capable of handling larger publishing tasks than microcomputers and allow the distribution of the workload among specialists. The workstations also add processing power and disk space to the system. However, Unix is complex and difficult to learn and high-end publishing systems get outdated quickly. A compromise solution may be to use workstations on a network and incorporate microcomputers.

Building the electronic studio
Article Abstract:
Perry Jeffe, the editor of 'The Jeffe Report', feels that computers enhance creativity. The design process does not change, but the medium influences the result. Designers should not spend much time on tasks that were formerly left to production people. Much of what is done on computers is secondary design work. Jeffe sees a division between design production groups (he calls them paradesigners) and art directors. Jeffe helped form the Computer Graphics for Design Association in 1988 to provide a forum for discussion and exposure to the new technology.
