Mountaintop publishing: high in the Himalayas, desktop computers help produce a nation's newspaper
Article Abstract:
Apple Macintosh Plus microcomputers and Laserwrite laser printers are used in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to publish the Bhutanese national newspaper, Kuensel, which means The Enlightener. Kuensel is a 12-page weekly publication that includes national and international news, features, sports, public notices, and a leisure section that contains Bruce Lee comics and a crossword puzzle. The paper's English-language edition has a circulation of 2,500. A Laserwriter printer has an altitude limit of 8,200 feet, a fact that is caused by the electrical properties of air at high altitudes; Kuensel's printers are operating at about 8,100 feet.
