Natural selections; Adobe Publishing Packs, Bitstream Fundamentals Series
Article Abstract:
Adobe's Publishing Packs and Bitstream's Fundamentals Series are discount typeface packages with specific publishing applications intended for use by the amateur seeking professional results. Publishing Packs, available in Mac and PC versions, are made up and guided by professional designers. In the Publishing Packs family, the $395 Newsletters group is designed for use in display type, but also works well in text; the $475 Forms & Schedules group works well for high-volume requirements; and the $475 Presentations group is best for working with flip charts and projections. The Fundamentals Series, $395 each, has no guidelines or advice and is made up of Newsletters, which is good for large or small type; Books & Manuals, which is best for small text sizes; and Flyers, which is suited for sparse copy requirements at large sizes. Both are good packages, but Adobe's provides better learning tools.

On font street
Article Abstract:
Bitstream Inc's Fontware Library and Adobe Systems Inc's Type Library give Ventura and Pagemaker users a variety of typefaces in any point size and matching screen fonts. Both work with PostScript printers. Bitstream also works with LaserJet Plus and Series II printers, and some dot-matrix printers. Both packages are of equally high quality at higher resolutions, but Adobe's print quality is superior for PostScript fonts printed at 300 dpi. Bitstream is $95 for the installation package and $195 for a typeface package. Adobe is typically $185 for a typeface package, although the range is $95-370.
