New dimensions in drawing
Article Abstract:
Three-dimensional modeling software packages offer several advantages over conventional two-dimensional illustration tools, including enabling persons with no freehand sketching ability to create interesting images, creating effects impossible with illustration tools and simplifying the modeling of 3D images, facilitating visualization of images in space, quick and cost-effective addition of people to illustrations, creation of realistic images and easy reuse of drawings. Features of packages that provide these advantages include modeling tools that employ measurements and design and assembly of geometric shapes to create 3D objects, photorealistic rendering functions, tools for automatic changes in object size and perspective and import of image files from other graphics programs. Three 3D modeling programs produce dummy-like body figures for use in other 3D software packages. The powerful modeling and render facilities of 3D modeling software packages are also useful in 2D illustration.

3D Studio 4.0
Article Abstract:
The six new functions in 3D Studio 4.0, Autodesk Inc's DOS-based modeling, rendering and animation application, are big time-savers that are well worth the $295 upgrade from version 3.0. 3D Studio comes with five different modules, including Shaper for silhouetting a 3D object and Lofter for expanding the shape into a solid. Each module has its own interface. The new functions include Camera Control and Match Perspective, which allows users to change perspective in real time. Inverse Kinematics uses the keyframe animation technique, which automatically fills in the animation frames between predesignated key frames. The feature creates hierarchical object chains, such as bones connected with each other, that can then be animated intuitively. Fast Preview quickly roughs out an animation without going through the time-consuming process of full rendering. 3D Studio 4.0 lists for $2,995.

ColorUp
Article Abstract:
Pantone Inc's $99 ColorUp for Windows or Macintosh enhances graphics software, especially presentation software, with over 1,500 ready-made 16-color palettes. The user need only choose a background shade and the program matches a palette and imports color onto an entire presentation, including title, data sets, text and ten different types of charts, such as scatter, bar, bullet and pie charts. The 16-color palette system is compatible to even the lowest-end computers. Changes in tone between on-screen and printed colors may occur, but the program maintains legibility and the coordination of the color palette. ColorUp palettes may also be used with Aldus Freehand, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator and Micrografx Designer. The program can train the user and perform experiments with theories of color design and color separation.
