Studio in a box
Article Abstract:
CorelDraw 3.0 for Windows by Corel Systems Corp is the best all-around drawing program available on any platform. Listed at $595, the package offers six separate programs in one: CorelDraw's new version; CorelPhotoPaint, an excellent paint and photo retouching program; CorelChart, a statistical charting program; CorelTrace, a color autotracing program that converts scanned images into drawings; CorelShow, a presentation software; and CorelMosaic, an on-screen visual catalog user artwork. The package also includes a CD-ROM disk containing over 12,000 images and 250 TrueType fonts. CorelDraw 3.0 is more interactive, encouraging greater creativity, and features new options, such as an expanded Text menu which includes a thesaurus, spelling checker and hyphenator. It also offers new roll-up menus which resemble window shades. Its other new features include: Artistic Text, a scrollable list of 5,000 art elements and symbols; text linking to any attached path; text justification to the beginning, center or end of a path; and extrusions as real three-dimensional objects that can be rotated, given perspective or adjusted for lighting.

Infini-D
Article Abstract:
Specular International's $895 Infini-D graphics program for Macintosh is highly recommended for photorealistic rendering, hierarchical object linking and animation. Its rendering ability is easier to use than most systems because it is intuitive rather than precise. This difference makes Infini-D most effective for users who need to conceptualize or illustrate. Hierarchical linking allows users to keep the shapes that make up a particular object together during movement. Infini-D's animation is time-based rather than frame-based and thus allows control over the actions of each object. Modeling on Infini-D is easy, but spatial visualization and placement are not as simple as systems which use perspective grid placement. Ray-traced rendering is very fast, but playing animation in real time requires an external program.

MacDraw Pro 1.5
Article Abstract:
Claris Corp's $399 MacDraw Pro 1.5 is a competent drawing program that is recommended for current MacDraw Pro users but will offer little to non-users. Version 1.5 offers existing users outstanding gradient controls and the new Fast Preview feature. Also offered are a variety of gradient options and ease of controlling them, which are unmatched in the market. Particularly useful is the fact that the program automatically stores gradient effects in a palette that stays with the drawing. On the down side, Deneba Software's Canvas 3.0 equals or betters MacDraw Pro 1.5 in almost every category, and Canvas costs the same as MacDraw. Current MacDraw Pro owners can upgrade for $99.
