Strategic alliances outnumber product introductions at the Mar 1991 Seybold Seminars, but several interesting products are displayed. Adobe Systems Inc announces a licensing agreement with DEC for DEC-fonts Typeface Collection, which allows documents to include Adobe Type 1 fonts. The DEC-Adobe alliance also enables a document on a DEC network to be sent with attached fonts, and read the corresponding fonts when received. The first 14 LaserWriter type fonts cost $420. Several font vendors announced the release of typefaces in the new TrueType format. Recognizing TrueType's market appeal, Monotype releases Imprints, TrueType fonts sold separately for $30 apiece. Letraset USA's FontStudio 2.0 converts Adobe Type 1 and Type 3 fonts into the TrueType format. Additionally, Aldus, Quark Inc, Time Warner and several other computer companies introduce new products or product enhancements.

Tracking the wild workgroup

Article Abstract:

'Full-scale' publication management software packages provide tools for controlling the entire publication cycle in workgroups. Commercial and corporate publishing often involves groups of people in the production of documents. Full-scale publication management systems include tools for planning, controlling and scheduling writing, editing, page layout, routing, tracking and storage of multiple versions of documents, composing ads, creating signatures and impositions and production of a variety of accounting and status reports. Other features common to many of the software packages include compliance with the Macintosh version of QuarkXPress for layout, open architectures, data base management systems and support for the Structured Query Language. Several open-architecture or QuarkXPress-compatible publication management software packages are briefly described.
